What is Sonicare’s BrushSync? – The system explained.
Some members of Sonicare’s toothbrush and brush head lineups carry their BrushSync designation. This page explains what this feature is and what it does.
What is the BrushSync system?
How BrushSync works …
The system is based on RFID technology. (RFID stands for “radio-frequency identification.”)
- BrushSync brush heads See the list. contain an embedded RFID microchip in their base.
- When one of these heads is installed on a BrushSync capable toothbrush handle See the list., it’s able to detect the head’s microchip. And subsequently identify it both as a unique entity (a specific head) and according to its type (such as C2 Optimal Plaque Control, G3 Premium Gum Care, etc…).
Then with that information …
Fully-capable BrushSync toothbrush handles can:
a) Perform Mode Pairing.
Via this feature, the brush’s handle will automatically switch its brushing mode and intensity settings to the ones Sonicare considers optimal for the brush head that’s been mounted.
For example, when a W3 Premium White head is installed on a DiamondClean Smart toothbrush, its handle will switch to White+ brushing mode, full intensity.
Mode pairing personalization.
Some toothbrush models allow you to substitute BrushSync’s default intensity and brushing mode settings for your own custom ones. Your personal settings will then be implemented each time that specific type of head is mounted.
b) Provide brush head replacement alerts.
Via this feature, each brush head that’s used with a toothbrush’s handle is tracked (individually). Both brushing time and pressure are recorded.
And based on the information that’s been collected over time, the BrushSync system will trigger an alert when the end of the currently mounted head’s effective lifespan has been reached and it’s time for a replacement.
Since both brushing time and the level of pressure you use are tracked, your personal brushing style will affect the BrushSync system’s calculation.
Which Sonicare toothbrushes and brush heads are BrushSync capable?
When it comes time to pick out a new toothbrush or replacement brush heads, there are two important points to know.
- Only some of Sonicare’s brush head lines have the embedded RFID microchip that’s required for the BrushSync system.
- Not all of Sonicare’s toothbrush lines have BrushSync capability. And of those that do, not all offer both BrushSync features. (See below.)

The ways BrushSync capable toothbrushes differ.
1) The number of BrushSync features they have.
Not all BrushSync capable toothbrush models offer both BrushSync features. Specifically:
- The lowest-end Sonicares in our list above do not have the Mode Pairing feature.
- All of the models do, however, feature the brush head replacement alert.
How to know which ones you’re getting on a brush.
In Sonicare promotional materials, they designate the capabilities of BrushSync models as being “1X” or “2X.”
- 1X = The model has the brush head replacement reminder feature only.
- 2X = The model has both brush head replacement reminder and mode pairing features.
2) Brush head replacement alerts.
The toothbrushes listed above also vary in the way they signal it’s time for brush head replacement.
Higher-end models do so by way of the Sonicare smartphone app, an LED light on the toothbrush’s handle, and handle beeps and tones. Lower-end models just have the handle LED signal light. (See picture above.)
BrushSync brush heads = Click-on style.
All BrushSync heads feature Sonicare’s standard/universal click-on design. And that means that they can be used with most all of Sonicare’s other toothbrush handles too. Although, unless the handle has BrushSync capabilities, doing so provides no extra advantage.
The opposite is true too.
It’s also possible to use standard non-BrushSync heads with BrushSync capable toothbrush models but, of course, no BrushSync tracking, reporting, or mode pairing is performed.
That means, if you don’t value the features that the system offers or possibly are looking for a cost-saving option, the use of a BrushSync head isn’t required for your toothbrush to run and be used.
Additional specifics about how BrushSync works.
Syncing up a head with the BrushSync system.
When you first place a BrushSync capable brush head on your toothbrush, its handle will acknowledge that it has been properly registered with its BrushSync system by flashing its brush head reminder light (green) three times.
Multiple brush heads can be tracked.
The Brushsync system is able to keep track of the use of more than one brush head. That means you can switch between the use of different ones/styles to accomplish different brushing duties without the system becoming confused or reporting inaccurately.
Turning off the brush head replacement light.
Once the amber brush head replacement light has indicated that the effective lifespan of your brush head has been reached, it resets itself (turns off) when you place a new brush head.
Technically, even placing a worn-out brush head as a “new” replacement will turn off the handle’s replacement light, if that head has not been previously synced to that handle. But the appearance of a worn-out head versus a new one are quite different, so a simple visual check should keep this event from being a problem.
The brush head reminder feature can be deactivated.
If you don’t want to take advantage of head replacement reminders, your user manual will explain how to deactivate this feature.
